Kefir Breakfast

Kefir Breakfast

Ever since I started making kefir, I’ve been serving up kefir smoothies mixed with fruits. I need to start thinking of more variety of kefir food. ?

Because I don’t add sweetener to the kefir, I’ve to mix it with sweet fruits.

Our favourite banana slices, raisins kefir! Just chop up everything. Throw them into the bowl. Scoop kefir – quantity to taste. Mix. Voila! Easy enough for breakfast!

A not so good morning *sniff sniff* I’m still having a running away nose and am still sick.

IMG_5626.PNG

I feel like ?. And I didn’t sleep last night. See my bleary eyes. I’m so sad that I missed school today. I was so looking forward to it. I hope the babes don’t miss me too much. I won’t be there to serenade them under the stars and catch bubbles for them. Sigh! How I hate being sick. It sux big time!

IMG_5627.PNG

My last selfie looked awful?? Of course! I’m sick!! Ok ok I must look good even though I’m sick. Here’s another selfie. Blurry? I haven’t had my breaky yet, that’s why.

IMG_5628.PNG

Hmmm… I still need to keep up with my physical exercise although I can’t go to school. That horrible Gregory at school laughed at my moobs. ? he said he’s going to seduce all my gorgeous girlfriends from me. How dare he!! I’m just not tall enough for my weight. I’m not the fat kind of fat! ?

IMG_5629.PNG

Here I go, on my green exercise towel. Look! 6 pack abs!

Hah!

IMG_5630.PNG

I stretch and stretch and stretch…

IMG_5631.PNG

Streeetchhh…

IMG_5632.PNG

There! I’ve done it! Toe in mouth!! Wonderful yoga skill! I’m really good! But I must be humble, hehe, not too much praise please.

Let me tell you a secret.. My Papa can’t do this. He sat on the floor and stretched and stretched and his fingers only reached his knees… max! Papa claims that he’s too tall, that’s why! Me thinks it’s his tummy that’s getting in his way. Don’t worry. Papa doesn’t read my blog. He doesn’t even have a Facebook account! Blogging is too advanced for him!!

Ming Ming’s Diary – The Sick (me) and the Elderly (Jiu Jiu)

Ming Ming’s Diary – The Sick (me) and the Elderly (Jiu Jiu)

Good day everyone! Did anyone miss me because I didn’t post yesterday?? Awww..! I miss all of you too. I sneezed a lot, had a running nose (I don’t know why it’s running away. But it must have changed its mind because it’s still on my face.), and tearing eyes.

IMG_5612.PNG
I conked out yesterday. My nose is still running away, I’ve tied it down with a tissue paper. So I won’t lose it!

IMG_5613.PNG
I called my Jiu Jiu (uncle) this morning to tell him that I’ll be visiting him. He’s been sick sick with a big cut on his neck. I think water leaks from it when he drinks. You know, sometimes when I drink water, and I don’t close my mouth properly, water dribbles out and wets my shirt. Poor Jiu Jiu.

IMG_5614.PNG

Mama lent me her phone to take Jiu Jiu’s photos. The doctor sewed him up like a piece of cloth. Check it out!! There’s still thread sticking out.

IMG_5615.PNG

That’s me, taking my afternoon nap. Mama says, I need to sleep so that my nose will stop running away.

I don’t understand why Mama always bundles me up in the blanket like I’m a piece of salted fish. C’mon! Do I look like salted fish to you?! ?

IMG_5616.PNG

So when everyone’s asleep, I’ll move my fat legs out of the blanket. See! So fair! I need more sun!!

Nooo!! Why did you call me white chicken!!!! I ain’t no chicken!!! ??? I’m a dragon!!’ RAWR!!!

Affordable Art Fair 2014

Affordable Art Fair 2014

I wanted to blog about 小小宝贝 but my phone memory is down to 0mb. Can’t take anymore photos with it. ? So I’m clearing my photo backlog.

Nat gave me 2 tickets to the AAF. Turned out that the person who was supposed to go with me couldn’t make it. Tried asking the people around me.
1. Wanted to go but not in SG or had prior appointment.
2. Eee! Simi Lai eh?! Art fair?? – cultural desert – you know who you are. Don’t want to name you niah!!

So I went there on my own. I used to wander into art galleries (well, pre-children days). Now I hardly have the chance to do that. So I thought I should take a day off. And maybe buy an art piece or two since it’s supposed to be affordable.

But, boy! Was I wrong! I should go to EAAF (extremely affordable art fair) not just AAF. Still out of my budget. ? I still can’t see myself forking out a few grand for a piece of art. I need to work harder and make more money. Nevertheless, I saw some paintings that I liked, some interesting ones and some which left me wondering, huh?! Like that also can?!

IMG_5587.JPG

This was the “huh! Like that also can?!” Expand it on your screen, yes, you are right! It’s made up of Lego figurines! And guess what was the price tag?? A whopping 10 grand!!! I counted. 330 figurines. I’ve already started my Lego figurine collection. Soon I’ll have my $10k art piece framed and hanging on my wall. Cool yah?!

IMG_5496.JPG

This one?? Just kidding. It’s an art piece by 小小宝贝.

IMG_5495.JPG

That’s the little artist hard at work. But… Kid you not! Some pieces really looked like that! I could have it up for sale and market him as the prodigal baby artist and make him work for his education fund.

Or else an abstract piece like this by 宝贝.

Preschooler drawing

Anyway, here are some which I liked or found them interesting.

IMG_5588.JPG

I like round and colourful things. This fits very aptly. Nice right? But I can’t afford it. So I snapped a photo of it for memory’s sake.

IMG_5589.JPG

This interesting dress was made out of a map on the contours of the Himalayas.

IMG_5590.JPG

Robot faces made from tin. Very retro!!

IMG_5591.JPG

That’s the joker on his motorbike. Muahahahah!

IMG_5592.JPG

Abstract looking Big Bird.

What? I like kiddy stuff?? Ok mah! Relieving my childhood!

IMG_5593.JPG

Colourful dog sculpture!

IMG_5594.JPG

Rush hour! Kind of reminded me of raffles place during peak hours. I like the layering of the pieces and the bold red and black colours.

IMG_5595.JPG

I like these 4 paintings depicting famous scenes in Singapore. The paintings were made up of only vertical and horizontal lines. Dabbed to form the images. Cool right? Within my budget but too bad.. Sold by the time I got there. I particularly liked these 2.

IMG_5596.JPG

IMG_5597.JPG

Now this one… I really liked it a lot.

IMG_5598.JPG

It’s a marker drawing with clean lines. The central figure pushed past all obstacles, people to emerge from within. That’s my interpretation. I stood in front of it for the longest time ever. I went off to dutifully cover the grounds and then I came back again. But I couldn’t see myself shelling out 7 grand for that. I took a photo of it and forwarded to hub “nice or not?” “7k leh”

The reply was “you siao arh?! 7k for that?! You come home now! I draw one for you!!” So story over Loh….

Still, I’m looking forward to AAF 2015!

IMG_5575.PNG

Hey dude! Don’t I look cool? I tugged half my buttons off while Mama was getting Jie Jie ready for school.

She turned around and exclaimed, “Aiyo! Ming Ming! You look like a Sam Seng!!!”

What’s a Sam seng? It must be some singlish slang for hamsum.

IMG_5576-0.PNG

Huh? I have moobs and a paunch?? I’m not some dirty old uncle. These are hidden muscles, the potential beneath, yet to be unleashed.

I’m a baby! Babies are meant to be cuddly!!! So these are my cuddles!!!

IMG_5577.PNG

Too cute for words?? Aww..!! Ok ok. I’ll dress up. Wouldn’t want my cuddles to be pinched. It’s already bad enough that strange aunties pinch my cheeks everyday and exclaim, “so cute…!!” Can’t they just say it without pinching??

IMG_5578.PNG

Ssshh! Let me finish reading my book first. I’m reading ahead so that I can go to school and impress the babes with my profound vocabulary. It’s important to be learned and Sam Seng (singlish for hamsum ya??) at the same time.

IMG_5579.PNG

? Mama! I want to go to work with you! Pretty please!? Don’t leave me behind!!! Pulease..!! (Watery eyes)

Healthy Living – Milk Kefir

Healthy Living – Milk Kefir

How I got started on Milk Kefir!

Wow! I’ve taken such a long break from blogging. My phone is bogged down with so many photos which I’ve stored for my blog articles which I’ve no time to write. I’m blaming it all on my holiday and procrastination.

Anyway, here’s something on what I’ve been up to lately.

Milk Kefir! In a nutshell, the good bacteria in Yakult and Vitagen? That’s it! Minus the high sugar concentration in these 2 drinks.

It all started when I was lamenting about the expensive probiotics that 宝贝 was taking to keep her eczema from flaring up. And hopefully, to introduce enough good bacteria into her system that she outgrows her food allergies.

“Why don’t you try making your own?” Celly said. “Very easy wan!!”

I looked at her doubtfully… “Sure or not?!”

Her mom managed to get some kefir grains from her friends and has been making kefir for them. Her son’s eczema condition has improved tremendously after eating it. I have read about people cultivating their own kefir but I never thought it could be done in hot, humid Singapore!

So she kindly gave me some starter kefir grains, with very clear and explicit instructions on how to do it. She even lent me her plastic sieve as I only had metal ones at home. I bought the equipment from Daiso a few days later. So I’ve done a few rounds of it and glad to say, my kefir grains are still surviving!!! ✌️Thanks Celly!!!

It simply tastes like original yoghurt. Sour loh. Only 小小宝贝 eats it in its original condition. Don’t ask me how he does it! He simply loves it!! The rest of us eat it mixed with fruits or cereal!

So how to go about doing it??

milk kefir grains.JPG

This is what the kefir grains look like. The bunch of spongy curd in the container.

Pour milk over the kefir. 100ml of milk for every 10g of kefir.

Milk in milk kefir.JPG

It’s so easy that 宝贝 can do it too!! Cover the container and leave a little gap so that the gas produced during the fermentation can escape. Or else you will be faced with a minor explosion of fermented milk in your cupboard… Something that I don’t look forward to. Leave it in a dark and cool place. I leave it in my cupboard that’s not frequently used so that it’s not disturbed. If you want it to be more liquid (smoothie kind), take it out after 2 days. I prefer it to be more solidified so I “harvest” it after 3 days.

stirring milk kefir.JPG

This is what it looks like after 3 days.

sieving milk kefir.JPG

Filter it with a plastic sieve. The filtered part is what I add into fruits.

filtered kefir grains.JPG

I’m left with the kefir grains after the filtering. Here we go again!

When my kefir grains propagate, I can give some away so that everyone can benefit from it. Hope they grow up soon!!!

2 Dec 2014

This gets more interesting every day. After I started talking to people about kefir, I found out that kefir grains are being sold at Tekka market! So if you are in Singapore, head there!!

9 Oct 2015

A lot of things have happened since the last update.  First of all, I have changed the sieve.  I no longer use the one in the picture, because the holes were too big and my kefir grains kept slipping through them.  So they were not multiplying at all, as I kept losing them.  On the bright side, they ended up in my stomach, so it’s not too raw a deal. :p

I have since, changed to this plastic sieve and I stopped losing every single precious grain.

sieve for milk kefir I have also changed my fermentation time to half a day.  This is also dependent on the weather and location. As Singapore is a warm country, the fermentation time tends to be shorter than in temperate countries.  If you like a more sourish taste, then you can leave it out for 1 full day.  I have taken it out of the dark cupboard and left it on my kitchen tabletop so that it’s more convenient.  Therefore, the fermentation temperature is higher than the dark cupboard as well.  These are some contributing factors.

I have also switched to glass containers to house the kefir.  Plastics are generally pretty stable and shouldn’t react with the kefir, but since I have glass containers at home, I use them instead.

New Instructions :

  1. Put the kefir grains in a glass container with a wide opening.  I’m using a pyrex glass container. For every 10g of kefir grains, pour 100ml of milk over them.
  2. Leave them to ferment in a cool place, away from the sun.  Fermentation time depends on temperature. Optimal temperature is around 22-25 degrees C. For Singapore weather, fermentation time is around half a day.  If you like it to be more sourish, then ferment them for 1 full day.
  3. Sieve the grains using a plastic sieve with fine holes. Kefir is ready to be eaten.  Store them in the refrigerator.
  4. Put the kefir grains in a glass container and repeat step 1.

The things I do with Milk Kefir! Yums!

27 Dec 2015

Don’t make the same mistake as I have done. My poor kefir starved to death….

Temporary stopgap measure to continue with milk kefir cultivation while waiting for my new kefir grains. Yep! I continued cultivating milk kefir without the grains.

Swiss Air – Disappointing is an understatement!

Swiss Air – Disappointing is an understatement!

My first time on Swiss Air, probably my last time. Unless, it’s on a business trip and it happens to be the only suitable airline.  Or else… NAH AH!!

I have never taken Swiss Air before, although I have taken quite a many other ones.  Due to the recent air disasters, my company decided to split the whole group of us into 2 different flights – Swiss Air or Singapore Airlines.  Obviously, everyone wanted the Singapore Airline flight…. so we had to “lucky draw” the air ticket.  Lucky me ended up with Swiss Air. (That’s precisely why I stay away from casinos!)  I just thought that, since it was a pick between the 2 airlines, the quality and standard of the 2 airlines should be pretty close.  Although my brother warned me about Swiss Air, having taken it last year.

And Boy! I was utterly WRONG in my assumption. It’s far from the standard of Singapore Airlines.

Listing my reasons in descending order of importance :

9. Earphones?!

The first that struck me when I boarded the plane was, huh?! Earphones?! That’s so 20th century! Most of the flights which I have taken in the recent years have since switched to headphones.  And why am I picking on such nitty gritties? Well, a plane’s a plane.  I can’t inspect the engine so I can only pick on the small stuff.  That’s what makes the whole consumer experience right?

8. No overnight bag

This is the FIRST airline.  FIRST! That doesn’t provide an overnight bag for a long overnight flight! Serious! Luckily, I remembered to bring my own toothbrush.

7. No socket for gadget charging

Ok, this is a very recent thingy.  I have only seen this in the planes which I have taken this year. That’s why it’s low on importance, yah?

6. No moisturiser or amenities in the toilet.

So far, all the airlines that I have taken (except for Scoot, Asia Air, not counted lar!! Budget airlines!! Budget leh!) have moisturisers in the toilets. So giam siap meh?? It’s not like we are paying peanuts??

5. Call buttons are for show

You can press the call attendant button for the entire flight and no one will appear.  I highly suspect that they are simply put there for decorative purposes.

4. Not allowed to pick seats during online purchase of air tickets.

I have been buying my air tickets online.  Heck! I have been buying almost everything online!! I am an avid online shopper! This is the first time, in recent years, that when I buy air tickets online that I am unable to pick my seats. Especially when I am buying a ticket that has a child no-seat ticket attached to it.  Usually the front row seats can be picked.  But to give the airline the credit, they did give us a front row seat for that particular ticket at the “manual” check in counter at the airport.

3. No baby food prepared

Of course Scoot didn’t have that… Budget airline.  I took SQ for the past few times when I was travelling with a baby.  They even gave us a few jars of baby food to pick from and even warmed them up for us.  Ok ok… don’t compare with SQ huh?? So discriminating arh? Ok ok… I try not to..

2. Only one cup of milk

I asked for milk for my girl.  The flight attendant whipped out a little 250ml bottle of milk and starting to open it to pour it out into a glass.  I told her, “Thanks, but you don’t need to pour it out.  She can drink it out of the bottle directly.” Her reply really caught me off-guard.

“Sorry! I can’t give you the whole bottle of milk. Other people may want milk too.  I only have 4 bottles.” What the heck?! 4 bottles of 250ml of milk for half the plane?! That’s a miserable 1l of milk?! I took a sip of the milk. Nothing special leh.  In fact, Meiji milk tastes better. Giam ganah to the max!!!

1. This is the BIGGEST reason that put me off Swiss Air flights! ATTITUDE!!!

Waaa! When I think about it now, as I’m blogging about it, it gets me worked up again. Chill chill! Or else high blood pressure ya?

What do you do when you press the decorative call button for forever and no one comes, while your toddler is screaming his head off, with the hub struggling to contain and prevent him from kicking the dinner tray over, trays on the pulled-out table, and your preschooler suddenly declares, in the midst of the chaos that she MUST go to the toilet now, or else….!!!

So, while I was trying to balance 3 overflowing dinner trays and trying to clear a path for my daughter to visit the toilet, I spied a recess between my seat (I was sitting on the last row) and the wall.  Instinctively, I stacked the 3 trays on top of one another securely on the floor in that recess.  Ok.. problem solved.  Hub was still struggling with screaming toddler, but that’s his problem as he was sitting in the section behind us, separated by a wall. Preschooler was safely back in her seat, after her toilet expedition.

The flight attendant (the same one who refused to give me milk, but ok, that’s not her fault, it’s logistics) came by with her food trolley to clear all the trays. Obviously my tables were empty. In her school teacher voice, she asked,”Where are your trays?”

“Behind me.” I pointed to the neatly stacked trays on the floor behind my seat.

She glared at me, for at least 1 minute (I thought her eyes were going to pop out from their sockets under the pressure), huffed and pushed her trolley away without clearing the trays.  Oh well, I thought, don’t want to clear, not my problem…

A while later, she came back (probably after depositing her trolley). She stood over me and glowered at me, “next time don’t put your trays there!” It was the tone and the words which got to me. I gave her my look-at-her-up-and-down look and said,”My daughter needed to go to the toilet and there was nowhere else to put the trays.”

She continued with her laser-glare while she picked up the trays.

Wa lau eh! That’s the worst service I have ever received!! Super pissed off! The plane can be void of amenities, but bad service is something that gets my hackles up! Come to think of it, I should have taken the cutlery and cups and dishes apart and lay them on the floor so that she had to pack everything together before she could clear the trays. But then again, I won’t be setting a good example for my daughter. Sigh! How I wish I am not a mother and I can do all these nasty things! Couldn’t even swear at her! Must preserve my good mother image… What a sacrifice!

Ok… That’s it.  Rant over! On with my wonderful holiday! Just no more Swiss Air for me after this trip! Don’t let me see her on my return flight siah!!! Or else… I will…. keep pressing the call button and make her serve me 100 times! Hey wait! The call button is gei one… Must think of something else to torture her with!

Say say only lah…

Destiny

Destiny

What has reached you was never meant to miss you and what has missed you was never meant to reach you.

How very true! But of course, this doesn’t stop us from working towards what we want!

And I do believe that it always pays to give. Not everyone has the ability to give, the magnanimity to do so. It’s something that I’m still trying to work towards. If I’m lucky enough to have more than that others have, it’s time to give.

Good-bye Ah Ma!

Good-bye Ah Ma!

It’s been a week of yo-yo emotions, especially for my Mom, uncles, aunties and cousins.

My Ah Ma was sent to the hospital for a very minor procedure, to clear the blood vessels in her legs as her toes were turning gangrene. Little did we know that, the trip to the hospital was one of no return.

When we visited her one day before her procedure, she was still up and cheery. Even after her procedure, my parents visited in the afternoon and she was able to talk to them.

On that very evening, she suddenly had cardiac arrest and kidney failure. Til now, we don’t really know what happened. Then came a period of ups and downs. One moment the doctors claimed she was recovering, then the next, she was not going to make it. And finally, she left us on 23 sep. When the doctors declared that she was brain dead and it was decided that she be taken off the life support. Slowly, over a few hours, life ebbed out of her.

I hope that she had gone painlessly and peacefully. Although I’d never been as close to her as some of my cousins, who were looked after by her, were, but I was truly grateful to her. For without her, there wouldn’t have been me.

She’s led a blessed life, surrounded by loved ones and she’s given life to 4 generations of us, 39 of us.

Thank you Ah Ma and good bye!

Walking down memory lane…
